Koh Tao is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, east of the peninsula Thai.

Its geographic location make it quite impervious to the effects of the south western monsoon blowing from May to October and rather unaffected by the north east monsoon from October to March, unlike Phuket and Krabi.

Koh Tao is small, only 21square kilometers, covered with dense rain forest and quite mountainous.

Away from the great touristic migrations, Koh Tao attracts diving enthusiasts with its crystal clear waters and amazing dive sites. It is not unusual to spot wale sharks there.

Getting to Koh Tao is rather budget dependant. Low budgets will travel by night train from Bangkok (6 hours) to Chumporn, connecting with high speed boats departing early in the morning. Right now, Lomprayah high speed catamaran is the best pick, with free transfer from the railway station. Seatran is the other option and fares are similar (about 600 baths one way). The other option is to buy and integrated ticket form Lomprayah or Seatran covering bus travel to Chumporn and boat transfer. The more expensive option is to fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui with Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways, fare is around 4000 baths one way, but you might have to spend the night in Koh Samui depend at what time your flight arrive. Last boat leaves Koh Samui at 13.30

When arriving at the pier, go up the main road and you will found many different shops where to rent scooters and big bikes. Rental is usually quite cheap, but repairs in case of accident can be outrageous. The more sophisticated the vehicle, the more expensive the repairs. If you can ride, rent the cheapest bike, like a Honda Dream or a Sonic that’s what the local’s do and they are rarely wrong.  The price for Honda Dream or Sonic is usually 200baht per day. Another piece of advice: Quads look cool and non riders may prefer four wheels but these vehicles are very tricky to drive and really heavy to push on Koh Tao dirt roads. However, Koh Tao it's a small island and every main site are easy accessible just by walking.

Koh Tao is a scuba diving paradise. There are over 40 dives center and as many dive sites around the Island. The famous Chumporn pinnacle and Southwest pinnacle are stunning dive sites where tropical colorful fish species can be admired.

In Koh Tao you can learn diving from a simple Discover scuba diving in one afternoon to the professional levels such as Divemaster or Instructor. If you are already certified diver you can pass more advanced courses at the cheapest prices in Asia or just go fun diving in the morning or afternoon and even experiencing night dives and wreck dives.

Beginners will be asked to pass a medical certification in case of the doubt get a medical clearance from your doctor. Certified divers should carry  their certification card with them.

The quality of medical facilities vary by destination and way of travel. Most major cities and tourist areas like Koh Tao Island are well equipped with excellent medical facilities.
